Botanical symbolism offers a powerful way to connect life’s milestones to the natural world. As a lifelong gardener, having helped my Dad mow the lawn, grow runner beans and later propagate geraniums in the greenhouse for many years as a child, I have always felt a deep connection to the natural world. That connection now finds expression in my work as an independent celebrant, where I love incorporating natural elements and seasonal meaning into nature-inspired ceremonies that reflect the rhythm of life.
I’ve had an allotment for sixteen years, with a yearly aim to grow fruit and vegetables to last and store throughout the seasons. Since 2023, I have also been following more traditional growing practices, gardening according to the phases of the moon cycle. The moon’s waxing phase is associated with rising energy and growth towards the sky, making it the ideal time for sowing and planting crops that grow above ground. Conversely, during the waning phase, a drawing down energy supports the growth of root crops. Helpfully, the final moon phase corresponds to dormancy, with low sap and limited growth, which is usually my weekend off when I can delve into the Royal Horticultural Society website for future growing inspiration!
It took me a while to acknowledge just how significant this observance of natural rhythm is in my life. Gardening shapes my time outdoors, my physical activity (no one with an allotment needs a gym!), the food I grow, and the meals I make and share with others. More than that, it offers grounding, structure and a deeper understanding of cycles: growth, rest, loss and renewal, that mirror our lives.
It therefore feels entirely natural for me to weave botanical symbolism into the ceremonies I create. Plants and flowers have carried meaning across cultures for centuries, offering a shared symbolic language that can be deeply personal while remaining universally understood.
In funeral ceremonies, botanical symbolism often helps us express remembrance and continuity. Trees in particular are powerful symbols: rooted, enduring and connecting earth and sky. At my Mum’s funeral, I chose the ginkgo tree as a central symbol. The ginkgo represents endurance, resilience and hope. Its ability to survive adversity felt deeply reflective of her life and spirit, and offered a quiet reassurance that love and legacy continue, even in the face of loss. As a funeral celebrant, I find that these carefully chosen symbols can bring comfort and act as a steady companion to the written word.
In contrast, for weddings and vow renewals, botanical symbolism can reflect the nature of a relationship itself. For one vow renewal, I suggested the sunflower: a plant known for turning its head to follow the sun across the sky as its French name ‘Tournesol,’ illustrates. This natural behaviour makes the sunflower a powerful symbol of unwavering loyalty, shared direction and steadfastness. As a wedding celebrant, I work with couples to explore symbolic rituals that reflect their values, history and hopes for the future, whether through flowers, herbs, trees or seasonal elements.
Naming and welcoming ceremonies also lend themselves beautifully to plant symbolism. Seeds, bulbs or young plants can represent new beginnings and potential; something small that, with care and nourishment, will grow in its own time and way. Trees planted to mark a child’s arrival can become living witnesses to their life, growing and changing alongside them.
Botanical symbolism works best when it reflects lived experience, memory or intention: a favourite flower, a much-loved place, or a plant that simply holds a special significance in your life, relationships and connections.
By grounding ceremonies in nature and its rhythms, nature-inspired ceremonies honour life as part of something larger. They create moments that feel rooted, intentional and deeply human. Ceremonies that speak quietly, but powerfully, to the heart.
